Talking Heads (Tina Weymouth, Chris Frantz, Jerry Harrison, and David Byrne) are set to appear on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, in an episode that will air on Thursday night - June 13th, the same date as their appearance at Brooklyn's Kings Theatre for a Stop Making Sense Q&A with Questlove. Filming will take place the day before, on Wednesday, June 12th, with Questlove himself appearing as a guest on Wednesday night's episode. On Thursday's episode, the guest alongside Talking Heads will be actress Ayo Edebiri, who recently rose to fame from her appearance in The Bear.
There will also be a music performance on Thursday's episode from The Linda Lindas, which will no doubt involve Found a Job - the same song they will perform on Thursday at Kings Theatre before the screening of Stop Making Sense, matching the recent Blondshell performance of Thank You For Sending Me An Angel. Both bands released covers of these songs on the Stop Making Sense tribute album Everyone's Getting Involved that A24 released on May 17th.
After reuniting for several Stop Making Sense Q&As in September 2023, Talking Heads appeared for an interview together on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert in October. Before that appearance, it had been over 40 years since all four members of the band appeared on TV together, so these are some very special occasions. You can watch their interview with Colbert below, uploaded in three parts:
Coincidentally, Talking Heads will be appearing on episode 1988 of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon - 1988 being the year that the band released their final studio album, Naked. Or maybe it's not a coincidence at all, and they'll surprise the audience with a full Naked performance? Maybe not...
Talking Heads will certainly be talking about their recent return to the filming location of Stop Making Sense, the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood, which took place on June 5th featuring Blondshell opening, and a Q&A with Andy Richter after the film. There have been a lot of recent releases by A24 involving Stop Making Sense - theatrical release, streaming release, physical release of the film, several versions of a double LP including the usually-excluded songs Cities and Big Business / I Zimbra, a tribute album, and miscellaneous merchandise.
David Byrne was previously a guest on Jimmy Fallon several times, most recently appearing in March 2022 when American Utopia on Broadway was coming to an end. This episode featured the American Utopia band performing David's 2001 song Like Humans Do. While there, David participated in a game of Jinx alongside Jimmy Fallon, actress Renée Zellweger, and Tariq Trotter (Black Thought), who is a member of The Roots alongside Questlove. The Roots have also been Jimmy Fallon's house band for many years, and have previously performed with David Byrne, including a version of the Talking Heads song Born Under Punches (The Heat Goes On).
Tom Tom Club (Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth's band outside of Talking Heads) also appeared on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon in 2012, where they performed their 1981 song Genius of Love, which was also featured in the Stop Making Sense concert film. This will be Jerry Harrison's first time in Jimmy Fallon's company.
Tickets for the episode's filming on Wednesday are no longer available, so it's likely that most people in attendance will not yet have found out who they're lucky enough to see next week. It is expected that these special appearances on The Tonight Show will be available for the world to watch on YouTube on Friday morning. For US fans, you can catch it on NBC at 11:35/10:35c, Thursday night. For people fortunate enough to attend the New York Q&A that Talking Heads are doing that night, that gives you time to get back to your home or hotel to watch them again!
(Note: it may not have appeared yet on all schedules, as it's still a new listing; closer to the time it should be listed)
